A founding member of seminal 80’s big band Loose Tubes, John has gone on to become the
guitarist of choice for many of the country’s top players, involving him in a bewildering
range of collaborative projects with the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Andy Sheppard
and Gwilym Simcock. He also records extensively for tv and film, so you’re almost sure
to have heard him without realising it.

Sun 28 Oct  Orphy Robinson and Corey Mwamba
|
£8 (£6)

For some time now, Orphy Robinson has been the vibraphone player to see. He's exciting,
funky, unpredictable, with a cv that includes work with Courtney Pine, Jazz Warriors
and his own bands with which he records on the prestigious Blue Note label. Corey Mwamba
plays vibes too and (unusually) the dulcimer. As yet unrecorded, he’s hotly tipped to follow in
the footsteps of his inspiration and mentor Mr Robinson.
Orphy is an experienced music educator who’s worked at London’s Barbican and South Bank, as well
as the Lincoln Center in New York. He will be running an afternoon workshop for
young people. Contact us for details and booking.

Sun 25 Nov  Norma Winstone MBE and Nikki Iles
|
£8 (£6)

It’s hard to over-estimate Norma Winstone’s contribution to the world of jazz since her
emergence in the 70’s, working with the likes of Mike Westbrook, Kenny Wheeler
and John Taylor. She helped to redefine the role of the voice in jazz, setting it
on a par with the other instruments, often abandoning the use of words to explore more
fully the world of improvisation. She has continued to scale ever greater heights, and is
now in demand to perform at the highest level around the world.
"Norma Winstone’s voice is one of the glories of contemporary jazz" - Jazz Journal
International
"Right now she is at the peak of her form ... there is no jazz singer in the country to
touch her" - The Times
In a change to the printed programme, Norma will be performing in her regular partnership
with Nikki Iles, one of the finest jazz pianists in the country, and a headline act in her
own right.
Absolutely not to be missed.
