Autumn Programme 2006

All events are at the Chipping Hall, unless shown otherwise. Doors open 7.30. Music starts around 8.

Sat 16 Sept  Jazz Cafe £2.50 (£2)

Our new monthly gathering. Drop in for a drink and a chat. We're also planning some nice snacks. You could even listen to the music. With the house trio, plus occasional guests.

Sun 1 Oct  Sensorium £7 (£5)
Sensorium

Led by saxophonist Colin Tully, Sensorium have pioneered a music form known as Celtic Jazz - folk-influenced tunes played by a jazz ensemble. The result is a beautiful blend of musical styles that sounds perfectly natural and makes you wonder why everybody else isn’t playing it. Featuring the unique guitar and vocals of Paul Bradley, keyboards of John Paul Gard, bass of Duncan Kingston, and percussion of Henry Shaftoe, alongside Colin’s soprano and alto saxophones. And we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t mention that Colin wrote the music for the film Gregory’s Girl.

Sat 14 Oct  Jazz Cafe £2.50 (£2)

Sun 5 Nov  Jam Session £3.50 (£3)

A chance to check out the local jazz talent. Or a chance to show it off. The house trio will be on hand to provide accompaniment. Players of all instruments and standards welcome.

Sat 11 Nov (Town Hall, Market St)  Maroon Town £8 (£6)
Maroon Town

A fantastic ska band hailing from Brixton, South London. Their music pulls in elements of rap, jazz, soul, funk, dub, techno and more, but it’s basically (as they put it) ‘get-up-on-your-feet-and-dance’ music. These guys take their touring seriously - they’ve just been to Turkmenistan and Spain, and claim to have played in every country in Europe, as well as touring Central and South America, Canada, Japan and Africa. They’ve produced 4 CDs and done at least one session for Radio One. They also do a lot of education work, and will be running workshops in the afternoon. Call for details.

Sat 18 Nov  Jazz Cafe £2.50 (£2)

Sun 3 Dec  Anita Wardell £8 (£6)
Anita Wardell

We’ve had some great singers here over the last couple of years, but no one quite like Anita Wardell. She’s just won the prestigious 2006 BBC Best In Jazz award, and her latest album Noted was recently released to predictable acclaim. Known for her awesome scatting and delivery of bop numbers alongside heart-stopping ballads, Anita’s first solo album was described as "a model of the jazz singer’s art" by Phil Johnson in the Guardian.
If you’re a fan of jazz, you really shouldn’t miss this gig. If not, this lady will convert you. Book early.
